Evidence-Based Advocacy

According to Stand Again’s June 2026 submission to the Australian Government’s National Plan to End Violence, there are 22 dedicated service providers supporting pets impacted by domestic and family violence (DFV), but only five dedicated service providers for the 1.5 million male victims of DFV.

The submission also identifies zero dedicated DFV legal support, financial support or suicide prevention services for male victim-survivors.
No compassionate society should accept this.
Supporting animals is important. Supporting women is important. But what does it say about Australia when male victims receive so little recognition, empathy and practical support?
Ensuring No Victim Is Invisible
Every victim deserves to be seen, believed and helped. The enormous disparity in services is a sobering reflection on our priorities and should prompt serious discussion about how resources are allocated.
Tim at Stand Again deserves enormous credit for his tireless work on behalf of male victims of family violence and the intersection between DFV and male suicide.
His achievements include:
- Public recognition on multiple occasions by Federal MP Dan Repacholi, the Special Envoy for Men’s Health.
- A landmark submission mapping 336 DFV service providers across 19 service lines, providing what may be Australia’s first comprehensive analysis of service gaps.
- Acceptance to present two posters at the 2026 STOP Domestic Violence Conference, including the innovative CCSAT-M self-assessment tool for male victims of coercive control.
- Publishing two practical books: one for clinicians on coercive control against men, and another to help families and friends support men trapped in abusive relationships (link to the books here).
This is evidence-based advocacy at its best.
It isn’t about taking support away from anyone. It’s about ensuring that male victims are no longer invisible.
Well done, Tim. Australia needs more people willing to ask difficult questions, follow the evidence, and advocate for every victim.

On Tuesday 19 November 2019, we celebrate International Men’s Day. Many people don’t even know that such a day exists. Some years ago, Punch Columnist Richard Fleming wrote an article to celebrate International Women’s Day titled, “Why there is no International Men’s Day”. The opening sentence gives us the foundation for his thesis. “With today being International Women’s Day, there will be millions of men around the world thinking, “This is ...
