“Sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me”, is a saying that I recited to the bullies at school when they taunted me and the other kids who were my friends. I am not so sure that is true anymore. Words come from intentions and intentions become actions. Words are powerful, and they certainly can hurt us, but they can also be a great blessing.
Dr William Tiller, highly respected Professor of Materials Science and engineering at Stanford University, which is one of the most critically acclaimed universities in the world, carried out the following tests: To quote from an article called, “Warning: 10 experiments that will forever change how you think about your thinking”
William Tiller had the idea to test, when thoughts were energy, if it would not be possible to imprison this “thought energy” into electronic memory to later release it to affect the physical world. He has written over 250 scientific papers on how remote influence worked and was fascinated by the idea to charge a machine with a human intention. Since he could not test this idea on another human, he used the next best thing to a human: a fruit fly.
They programmed the little black box with a highly specific intention to raise the ATP production in the fruit fly larvae and meditated for 15 minutes with this intention in mind on the box. He set up a second laboratory in Minnesota and shipped the imprinted box and an empty box 1500 miles away. The other scientists put the box inside the larvae cages without knowing which is the imprinted one and the studies began.
They discovered that the intention indeed raised the ATP level and that it also affected the genealogical line of the fruit flies. They repeated this experiment often and found that the effect got stronger every time. The longer the imprinted box was in the room, the stronger the effect. It was as if the intention was also conditioning the room where the experiments were carried out.
William Tiller is not the only one to look into the power of thought. Jagdish Chandra Bose did experiments with plants in the early 1900s that indicated plants have reactions to music, thoughts and actions. Cleve Backster, father of the lie detector, also did experiments with plants in 1960s showing that plants respond to sound, thought and action. Very interesting you might say, but what has this got to do with fathering?
I thought you would never ask.
Recently I got a text message from a father who subscribes to the Dads4Kids newsletter, inviting me to look at a video by John Paul Jackson, “The Mystery of a Father’s Blessing”. Please watch below.
So, I rang ‘Andrew’ who had been brought up by an abusive father, to get the back story for the video.
As a child, Andrew had been to hell and back and is now making a go of being a good dad to his children and husband to his wife. Sure, he has had some setbacks and ups and downs, but he is coming from so far behind, that for him to even still be in the race is a miracle in and of itself.
Andrew recently lost his adoptive mother and he started to doubt his own sanity and began to question his self-worth. He even began to question if he had anything to pass on to his children because no one ever spoke good words or thoughts to him when he was a child. Read Andrews full story here:
Watching the “Mystery of a Father’s Blessing” changed everything for him and he is now beginning to bless his own children and speak good words over them and think good thoughts about them.
Andrew also shared how David Tensen’s YouTube story of how he had blessed his father as a grown man had deeply touched his life.
Sting wrote a song in the eighties called, “Spirits in a Material World”. We are more than matter, there is a spiritual side to life. There is so much we don’t know and understand. Scientists relatively recently turned sound into light at the Laurence Livermore National laboratory in California. Words
Jesus said, “the words that I speak, they are spirit and life”. In Proverbs it says that “life and death are in the power of the tongue.” It is obvious that words are powerful and a father’s good intentions and words, commonly called ‘a blessing’ can have a very powerful affect on a child’s future.
Every day, before my own children went to school (when I was able and present) I laid hands on my children and blessed them. My progeny are all doing well, even better than I did. They are certainly all better musicians than I ever was, and two out of the five were Dux at school. Three out of five have completed university degrees. One has just received his Masters on top of a double degree. The other two are running their own business. One of my sons, who is in business, is turning over several million dollars a year and going from strength to strength. “The blessing of the lord makes rich and does not add sorry.”
I didn’t do my experiment with intentional thought and positive faith-filled words on fruit fly like Mr Tiller, I conducted my experiment in the laboratory of life with my very own children and the proof is in the pudding. A fathers blessing works! You can’t argue with success. I know hundreds of other men who practise the mystery of a father’s blessing on their own children with the same unparalleled results.
Paul Lewis said, “A father’s words are like a thermostat that sets the temperature in the house”. The reality though is that a father’s words don’t just set the mood in the home but also the destiny of the children.
Frank Outlaw’s words are even more to the point: “Watch your thoughts, they become words; watch your words, they become actions; Watch your actions, they become habits; watch your habits, they become character; watch your character for it becomes your destiny”.
Lovework
Start blessing your children. Practice makes perfect. It is all about having good intentions and then putting those intentions into words and speaking those good words and good intentions over your children, one day at a time.
Yours for a father’s blessing

PS. To give you some further ideas on how to do your own Fathers blessing for your children. This short video shows the Jewish bless their children. Here is a powerful video story of a young father comforting his baby while he gets medical attention.
